Jonah - Salvation

Actions words - running from God and consequences...

Have student(s) write action words on dry erase – then act out story (C1 and C2) using picture boards/props and their own ingenuity/imagination(s).

Action words in Jonah – C1
  • (1.2) “arise, go, cry (preach)Have you been given direct instructions from authority?
  • (1.3) but Jonah, “rose up, fled, went downDid you obey or do your own thing?
  • (1.4) but the Lord “sent...a mighty tempest” Did you recognize a “storm” in your life after?
  • (1.5) but Jonah “was asleepWhat did you do then?
  • (1.9-12) confession. Are you faithful to confess when you've disobeyed?
  • (1.15) judgement - “cast him (into) the sea”
  • God's will ALWAYS done – (1.17) “prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah”
When life “swallows” one whole, like the great fish did to Jonah, what then? See 2.1 and beyond

Action words in Jonah – C2
  • (2.1) prayed
  • (2.2) cried (true repentance comes from deep within and will cause such mourning)
  • (2.4) (promised) to turn back to God
  • (2.6) more confession
  • (2.7) sincere now - “my soul fainted
  • FINALLY, (2.7, 9) “I remembered the Lord...I will give thanks, I vowed (to never run again)
  • THEN (2.10) the Lord, “spoke to the fish” and
  • the fish “vomited” up the backslidden preacher!
After all the dreadful things that happened to Jonah because of his disobedience, did he obey?
When bad things happen or don't go your way, do you examine what you might have done to cause them?

Look at what Jonah does after the big fish spits him up!
Action words in Jonah – C3
  • (3.1) Again, the Lord says “arise, go, preach
  • (3.3) Jonah “arose (and) went”
Look what happened when the child of God obeyed:
  • (3.5) the people, “believed...even the King (humbly) came off his throne”
Did Jonah learn his lesson? Not completely
  • (4.1-5) He prayed but “bitterly”
How did the Lord make the point, again, to Jonah – this time about a bad attitude?
  • (4.7, 8)“prepared” a gourd for shade
  • prepared” a worm
  • prepared” a heavy hot wind to wither the only shade Jonah had outside Nineveh
  • the Lord asks the question that identifies God can do anything He wills for a person or a people, “Why shouldn't I spare 120,000 people from judgement?”

The following activity will remind you not to run from God, who is our salvation.

if time,  cut out/glue activity
