by faith, Abraham...

" By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went." Heb 11.8

The only way this writer can think of to illustrate the faith of  Bro. Abraham is by way of personal testimony;
Fifteen years ago from this writing, the most difficult test of faith I had ever known was set in motion.  The details won't matter in 100 years as my mother use to say but it will give foundation to exhorting the faith of Bro. Abraham.
In a word, my life was turned upside down and my heart wrenched out of my chest, stomped and beat.  Our home broke up after sixteen years of marriage.  My sweet daughter was but six tender years old.  The details are heartbreaking and not necessary to this narrative except to say, I thought it is a thing in which I would never recover.  I thought I could never be happy again.  I loved motherhood in spite of this sorrow but could not enjoy it fully in the way one can who has an "unbroken" home.
The divorce details were six months in hammering out but worth every moment to protect my sweet girl as much as possible.  The betrayal was not the hardest though it hurt deeply.  The hardest part of the whole ordeal was the separation during the days of his "visitation" with our daughter.  I had waited ten long years for the Lord's will to have a child then six years later had to endure "visitation," and on several occasions, for the two weeks allowed under the terms of the settlement.
Alas, visitation years ended a few short years after it began - he just couldn't spare time to come get her.  We moved on.
However, less than two years after the breakup, a curious event took place.  One day my sweet girl and I were practicing a song because we had been occasionally asked to sing in church.
  • First, the song was, "He made a way."
  • Second, a phone call - a distraught aunt called to tell me of a message she had heard titled, "Standing on the Brink of a Miracle," a message about baby Moses being put into the crocodile infested waters of the Nile river.  I did not understand until years later when I began to put all the pieces together, what the Lord was saying.
  • Third, the same day, my ex-husband came to tell us he couldn't get our daughter for visitation because "his wife died.!"  To say I was dumbstruck is quite the understatement.
Obviously, because of the message I had just been made aware of, "Standing on the Brink of a miracle," this meant that our home would be put back together.  It was a logical conclusion.  I couldn't have been more wrong!

I'm sure Bro. Abraham could not have know the end of his trial of faith as he "went out, not knowing whither he went." I too, could never have seen fifteen years ahead to the life that is now giving you this story of faith.

To continue...
Life moved on. The separations between me and my sweet girl ended but still we were in a barren land, spiritually.  One other church was attended after the divorce until a little light began to dawn during this time. We could not stay there but had nowhere else to go.  Four years after the divorce we began to drive sixty-one miles one way, three times each week (Sun morning, Sun night and Wednesday night), to a little church the Holy Spirit had led us to.  Five years later, we moved to the area.  At present, I am still at this little church a total of nine years this summer.  (My girl married almost two years ago after much prayer that the Lord would give her "the best He had.")

Just before we moved, however, the Lord sent us to a friend's church almost two hours from home to hear this message; "You've not been this way heretofore." (Joshua 3.4)  The preacher said the Lord woke him up to change a series of messages he had been preaching from the book of Jonah to the passage in Joshua 3.4.  I don't have to explain to the reader there are no accidents in God's economy.  He KNEW we would be there that day and would need to hear these eternal words.
Needless to point out, it was shortly after that message we relocated sixty-one miles after thirty-eight years from the place I had called home.  The place I had met and married the man I thought I would spend the rest of my life with. The place I became a mother to my darling girl.  The "miracle" was how my Heavenly Father moved heaven and earth to get us moved and the complete peace and contentment I felt the first few months in our new home.  No earthly words can describe my peace.  My heart was again whole, content and happy.

"He made a way when there was no way."  The miracle was not putting our home back together but showing His child what He could do, when there way no way.  My heart was broken, bleeding, raw, hurting, yet somehow moving on because there was nowhere else to go. There were times in my prayer closet I could feel His loving arms around me. Comforting my soul in a way only He can.
Yes, I had misjudged my miracle but by faith I had no choice but to "press forward."
Easy, no. My choice, no.  Would I change it? No.

You see, by faith, I've learned to trust Him in a way I never would have, completely, had I not walked through that fire.  So, even though I "went out not knowing where (I would be going)," I obeyed and like a child trusts the father's hand it holds, I trusted Him.  He knows best.

Just like Bro. Abraham, one can trust His leading.  If He has pointed a direction, you had best "set your face like a flint," (Isa 50.7) and go!

by faith, Noah...

The fifth installment of the series on faith will address Bro. Noah.
 But to review:
  1.  Faith of Moses' parents to make a hard choice.
  2. What is faith?
  3. God testified of Abel's faith.
  4. Enoch's testimony was that he "pleased God."
Hebrews 11.7 tells us that "By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith."

Scripture says Noah was 601 years old when the waters were dried up. (Gen 7.6) So, six Hundred years old when he finished building it. Some have estimated that it took 75–100 years to build it, based on the mention of his age when he had sons, (Gen 5.32) but there is no reference to him starting the ark when he had sons. So it could have taken longer. We are not sure.
  • First Noah was an old man when he began this difficult task.
  • Second, his work pleased the Lord.  We know this because the purpose of the Ark was "to the saving of his house."
There could be much discussion regarding the details of Noah's story but the two points above are enough.  One is never too old to walk in the Lord's will - no matter how long it takes.  Also, the benefit of such a testimony when one trusts the Lord is the assurance that all one's family is safe in the Ark.  Of course, the Ark is the Lord Jesus Himself.  This believer has a prayer regarding the salvation of three family members that are "outside" the Ark will one day be "safe in the Ark."

by faith, Enoch...

Does your testimony "please God?"

"By faith Enoch was translated (Why?) that he should not see death; and was not found, (Why?) because God had translated him: (Why?) for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God."  (Heb 11.5)
  • "And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints," (Jude 1:14)
  • "And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters:" (Gen 5.22)
Except for his lineage in Luke 3.37, this is all we find about Enoch.  He is mentioned in the hall of faith but he is not esteemed in scripture as Noah, Abraham or Moses.  Yet, the Lord was pleased to tell of him among the faithful.  Moreover, his testimony was "that he pleased God."

The only other information given about Bro. Enoch is that he prophesied and lived 365 years.  Scripture doesn't indicate when he "met the Lord" but clearly, he trusted at some time.  This man, so ancient in the scriptures, saw millenia beyond his time to prophesy of the Lord's return.  That tells of one who walked so close to God that the Lord was "pleased" enough to share profound prophetic events with him.

Also noted is that he was "the seventh from Adam."  That alone is a blessed truth about Bro. Enoch  "Seventh."  Seven in the bible is the number of completion, perfection and rest.  Enoch was obviously destined to be a great man of God.  The Lord's will in his life would have been to preach, tell and live the truths about God.  He would've done it with such honesty, integrity and character that one would have had no choice but to heed his words about things past, present and future concerning the Lord.  It is a wonder what the hearers in antiquity would've thought about such words, "Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints," (Jude 1.14)

This blogger is at a loss - if my testimony is "that she pleased God..." then I will feel that my life has had value in the economy of Christendom when this life is over.

By faith, Abel...

This is the third installment in the series on faith. The reader can view the first two pieces below.

Hebrews 11.4 says, "By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh." Much can be said of the entire verse but the heart of this believer jumped at these words; "God testifying of his gifts..."
God testified of his gifts!  Is there anything in the life of the believer writing this blog that would cause the Lord God, Himself to "testify" of me?
The scripture in the book of Job comes to mind.  "And the Lord said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?" (Job 1.8)  It is evident that the Lord watches us from His high, almighty Throne.  Just as a father is proud of his children who excel, so, the Lord seems to be the same when His child excels in faith.
Of course, we know the rest of the story, how Satan says "of course he does well, You've put a hedge around him." (Job 1.10) Then, the Lord gives Satan permission (this part is important) to touch everything in Jobs life, except his life.
But I digress, how is the faith of Abel like this?  Whatever the trials in the life of Abel, we may ascertain that his Heavenly Father was proud of how he handled difficult circumstances by the words uttered in Heb 11.4 about him.  The scripture explains the end result of his faith when Abel, at the teaching of his earthly father, obeyed the principle of tithing. "And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the Lord had respect unto Abel and to his offering:" (Gen 4.4)
Because Able, by faith, obeyed the principle of tithing, the writer said "God testif(ied) of his gifts..."
The songwriter put it this way;     "I want my Lord to be satisfied with me.
I want my life to be what He’d have it be.
And when I come to that great eternity.
His smile will say He is satisfied with me."

Is the Lord satisfied with you?  Does He "testify" of you to whosoever He will?

What is faith?

It seems we need to regress before beginning the study on the faith of believers in OT/NT.  That being said, in the "hall of faith" chapter of Hebrews 11.1-3, let us take a look at what this writer had to say about faith.
"Now - Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. For by it (faith) the elders obtained a good report. Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the Word of God so that things which are seen were made of things which do appear."
Drawing from Webster's 1828 dictionary from which the meaning of faith is derived from previous languages, it is stated this way:
"FAITH, noun [Latin fides, fido, to trust; Gr. to persuade, to draw towards any thing, to conciliate; to believe, to obey. In the Greek Lexicon... to bind and draw or lead, as signifies a rope or cable....The sense of the verb, from which that of rope and binding is derived, is to strain, to draw, and thus to bind or make fast. A rope or cable is that which makes fast. Heb.].  The modern day Webster's defines faith as simply, "belief or trust."  This writer prefers the deeper meaning of the 1818 edition.

While studying on the meaning in the 1818 edition, let's look at the breakdown in Heb 11.1-3 regarding this mighty word, "faith."

  1.  "Now." The opening word "Now" to this chapter regarding "faith," seems to speak to the writer's passion for everyone to be as excited about this subject as he is.  If, as history, dictates, and scripture records,  Paul is the writer of this great book, we know his testimony about what the Lord did in his life.  This was a man who once wanted to create havoc in the lives of believers as well as kill them.  It was his singular purpose and goal.  Yet, as he opens this passage, it appears he is still so amazed by what the Lord has done in his heart that with an impassioned "Now," he bids others to listen to what "faith" is.                                                     Then, he begins to explain...
  2. "Faith is the substance of things hoped for... If you have faith, you have "substance." If you have the substance of faith, you will have "hope." What does one hope for in this life?  Peace, happiness, health, family's unbroken by sadness, material blessings...Certainly a believer knows better than to "want" material possessions but in the Lord Jesus, what else is needed in the temporal world?  A wise preacher once said that our material possessions are "added benefits," of the mercies of the Lord. How shallow are earthly thoughts and possessions.  The only value in life is what is placed on the eternal things of God. "Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost."(Rom 15.13)
  3. "the evidence of things not seen." How is it one can believe in what one cannot see?  The world only believes in what it can see. The believer is the opposite.  We believe in what we cannot see.  So how is this affected?  May I continue this observation by way of my testimony? One may see clearer when reading the story of Lazarus. (Jn 11.1-44)  Quite simply, "a dead man can do nothing, hear nothing, see nothing.  Although, I had been in church all my life, I was spiritually "dead."  I remember thinking I need to go to the altar at age 6 and later got baptized.  Nothing else, rather He didn't move in my heart again until age 15.  At the midweek service the man was preaching about the rich man who went to hell and I remember understanding that I was also lost.  I went to the altar but nothing happened.  I was still in church and living right and moral as much as I understood to do so, in spite of the turmoil in a broken home. Then, age 18, whilst riding home from a church choir practice, I was praying.  I was praying for a close relative who was indeed lost by the choices in their life.  As clear as the sounds I'm hearing at the moment, the Lord spoke to my heart and said, "Yes, he's lost but so are you!"  There it was. I couldn't deny it.  I submitted and humbled to the truth of the words whispered by the sweet Holy Ghost and I was from that point on "alive" to Him and His leading.  He saved me! He woke me from my dead, spiritual condition. I've been believing in "the evidence of things not seen," ever since.  I've trusted and prayed for things through the years that I've "seen" come to pass.  I know He hears, thus I continue to believe in "things hoped for (but) not seen."
  4. This faith gives us peace, hope and understanding of what "the elders reported." This faith also allows us to "understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were made of things which do appear."
"Now we see through a glass darkly..." (I Cor 13.12)
Maybe Faith is clear to the reader, maybe it is not but the balance of the study will show much evidence of great, wondrous, miraculous things done because one believed in the Name and Person of the Lord Jesus Christ.

by Faith...

Hebrews 11 has been billed "the Hall of Faith."  So it is that this blogger would like to begin a study about those who "died in the faith" never having received the promise of that faith (v13).
The study will go through what the Lord has given this blogger regarding each believer but at the beginning, the current verse being studied centers on "Moses parents." Hebrews 11.23 says that "By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, Why? because they saw a proper child; and were not afraid of the king's commandment." Because of the faith of his parents or his "goodly heritage," lets examine what the Lord did through Moses...
1.  "He refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter" (v24) - even though the Pharaoh's house is all he had known since infancy, somehow he knew he wasn't "one of them."  Do you suppose infants absorb emotion and sensations around them? If one is to take this verse, by faith, one would have to agree that they do. (Pro. 22 6)
A spiritual application would be when one is birthed into the family of God and comes to the Lord. One "turns from sin, by faith through the Lord Jesus, to God."  That is when the heart is illuminated to the truth of what the Lord Jesus did for a lost, dark, dying soul and one cannot stay in an unrepentant condition.

2.  Because of this early influence, before he was "drew out of the water," somehow he must've known what he was by birth or learned it somewhere along the way while growing up in the Pharaoh's house yet chose to "suffer affliction with the people of God, (rather than) enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season." (v25)   Again, can you see the influence you have over your youngster or those children whose paths you may cross?

How is it he knew of Christ 1400 plus years before He came to earth? "Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures of Egypt..." (v26)                                                          Could it be one may see that Christ is indeed found in the Old Testament?
3. Hebrews also tells us that, "he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king; for he endured, as seeing him (the Lord Jesus?) who is invisible." (v27)  Moses, had no desire for the world or the so called "treasures" to be offered as "son of the Pharaoh's daughter."  Do you seek worldly pleasures and thingsWould you rather be a friend of the world than a friend of Jesus?
4. He believed in the Lord Jesus and the promise of Him so much that "through faith he kept the passover..." (v28)  Do you believe the power of the Lord Jesus' blood to save you from eternal, spiritual death?

5. Because of his faith in the Lord he saw and was partaker in a mighty earthly miracle, the parting of the Red Sea, (v29) to the saving of a multitude of people, "his" people.  Do you believe the Christ Jesus can "save to the uttermost," all that believe?

As one can see by the points noted above,
  • faith believes the unbelievable
  • faith perseveres
  • faith is real

Ps 57.7
